the "act" of painting becomes the "content" of the painting

Abstract Expressionism Abstract Expressionism generally refers to a group of artists practicing in the 1940s and 1950s whose work is characterized by spontaneous and individual artistic expression in a non-objective manner. It synthesized a number of sources from the history of modern painting to create a highly individual means of expression that cannot be characterized as a single "style" per se. It is, rather, seen as a shared outlook that created what some have called the first true American art. Abstract Expressionism has also been termed the New York School because the center of the movement was in New York City.
